This week's video features the GB U23 men's rowing team, led by Olympic champ and Cambridge head coach Steve Trapmore , training in preparation for Varese, where they finished sixth overall in a tightly packed final. Despite a slow start, the GB crew battled their way to a fourth-place position through the body of the race, only to see Germany and the hometown favorites, Italy, storm through in the final 500m. As with the Australian crew, U.S. universities were well represented, with Oliver Wynne-Griffith and Thomas Pagel (Yale), James Johnston (Harvard), Morgan Hellen (Cal), Tom George (Princeton), and Cameron Buchan (Northeastern). The 2014 World Rowing Under 23 Championships, as usual, showcased the 'next generation' of senior level greats, but perhaps more so this year than last. Why? The Kiwi women's pair absolutely dominated their race, setting the only world best time of the regatta in Varese, and look like they're already contenders at the senior level given their silver at World Rowing Cup III in Lucerne. HSBC is fresh off a second-consecutive Henley Saturday appearance—Hampton School edged Brunswick (USA) on Friday by a quarter of a length, only to fall to St. Edward's (the eventual runner-up to Eton College) in the semifinal—that capped off a successful season, while Jes Rowing recently competed at the Irish national rowing championships, winning silver behind Skibbereen in the men's J14 coxed quad. 2012 Kiwi men's double (Photo: B. Kitch) All Black, that is. They don't care if you're ahead at the 500m. They don't care about high strokes coming out of the starting area. They don't even much care about high strokes to finish off a sprint. Why? Because they know it's a 2,000-meter race, and they're not going to slow down.

This week's video comes to us via the U.S. men's quad, who are coming off a great performance at Henley last week. The new-look combo fell just short of knocking off the home team (Sam Townsend, Pete Lambert, Charlie Cousins, and Graeme Thomas—the same lineup that took gold ahead of Germany at the second World Rowing Cup in Aiguebelette) in the Queen Mother Challenge Cup, leading through Fawley but eventually losing to the Brits by half a length. It was one of many great races at this year's Henley Regatta, which, as usual, featured more than its fair share of nail-biters, as well as a number of memorable storylines.

The first day of the 2014 Henley Royal Regatta is history, and what better time to celebrate the release of Jack Carlson's new book on rowing blazers? Our friends at Hear the Boat Sing recently reviewed Carlson's work, and it's well worth a read. Everyone lining the banks in Henley-on-Thames is donning their colors and supporting their schools and clubs, but as is always the case, the field has already been reduced by half.
